Mara's Success Story | Nevada
Before I found out about Nevada Human Development Corporation (NHDC) I was not doing well, I was working in the Fast food industry earning $8.25 per hour with no benefits, without any idea of what I wanted to-do in life. I thought that my opportunities of going to college, or training were almost impossible. My family migrates from Texas to Nevada every year, which was affecting me academically. As a daughter of migrant Farmworkers my parents had to make the tough decision of leaving me behind in the winter in Nevada with my Aunt and Uncle who are also farmworkers. Just so I have the opportunity to complete the entire school year in Nevada and graduate High School. After, I graduated High School without my parents present on my graduation day was tough. I thought about moving back to Texas with my parents and also working as a migrant worker, I knew I had to do something good with my life, fast and with little to no direction on what to do next.

I was able to enroll into NHDC with my parents agriculture work. I called and schedule an appointment to meet with a Workforce Consultant. I was able to enroll with my parent’s agriculture work. I began to get counseling and advisory from the Workforce Consultant, I learned that I had much more opportunities in life. She taught me everything I need to know to succeed, she made me realized that I loved anything that has to do with helping people.
NHDC provided me with a Job Readiness class that thought me how to create a resume, how to prepare for an interview and what was the correct way to answer questions. While in the program, I participated in a Work Experience as a Support Specialist with NHDC. I also assisted a resume workshop, I attended Community Health Worker Program and completed a Customer Service Training which all helped me in my position I am today.
I have learned that there are many opportunities out there and that you have to take them. NHDC will guide you on the way to approaching new opportunities that is a real-life changer. I learned that anything is possible and that education is really important if you wish to see an improvement.
While enrolled in the program I did have a few financial struggles, which were a big obstacle. I was not really making any money at $8.25 hourly and NHDC helped me when I needed the most. They were able to get my prescription glasses, nutritional foods, and work clothing which really helped during the interviewing process.
I am now working an MSC Industrial Supply, a leader in this industry, as a Customer Service Associate earning $15.00 hr. and with benefits. Which I love, I really enjoy my job, the perks and security it provides me. I am now attending Community College in which I will receive my Associate this June 2018.
If you are just starting the program take the opportunities that are offered to you. If you take the challenge to get out of your comfort zone it will change your life. We are not meant just to be Farmworkers like our parents. Their hard work is so we don’t have to do the same don’t give up, all of the changes that you will go through might get hard, but NHDC will help guide you through the process.
