Larry B. Sanchez Memorial Scholarship

The Larry B. Sanchez Memorial Scholarship Fund is dedicated to honoring the legacy of Larry B. Sanchez, a tireless advocate for agricultural workers. This scholarship supports motivated students from agricultural worker backgrounds who are committed to furthering their education. Open to college students for the fall of 2024, the scholarship offers multiple $500 awards to help them achieve their academic goals. Larry B. Sanchez’s enduring commitment.

The Legacy of Larry B. Sanchez

Lazaro “Larry” B. Sanchez was a loving husband, father and leader to the agricultural worker community. He was one of Oregon Human Development Corporation’s earliest executive directors when OHDC became its own entity in 1979. He later became a Regional Director of Employment Services in Washington’s Employment Security Department, serving the Central Washington region and being a prominent advocate for agricultural workers in the Yakima Valley. Larry remained connected to OHDC/NHDC as the Board Chair for several years, guiding and advising several former and current executive directors. He served agricultural workers tirelessly throughout his career and always spoke up on agricultural workers issues. OHDC/NHDC would not be the organization it is today without Larry’s passion and drive for serving agricultural workers in local, state, and national arenas.

Eligibility criteria

Scholarship applicant must be a student enrolled in a 2-4 year college/institution or a vocational training program and scheduled to start classes in 2026.
Applicants must live in Oregon, or the following counties in Washington State: Klickitat or Yakima.
Applicant or the applicant’s parents/guardians/spouse must have worked in agriculture in the last 12 months.
Applicants’ household annual income meets or is below 80% below the Median income. Click the following link to check income guidelines in your county. (huduser.gov)
If you have been awarded the LBS Scholarship in previous years. You are not eligible again.

To apply, follow these steps:

Write a short essay on the prompt at the end of this application on a Word Document (you will need to upload the file with the application)
Complete the Scholarship Application form below
Submit!

Please note that an incomplete application will not be accepted

If you are selected for the scholarship award, you will be notified by email and required to submit ONE of the following:

Certified high school/college transcript of 2026
If a high school graduate, a letter of acceptance to an institution for Fall 2026
If in vocational training, verification of enrollment.
