Pablo's Success Story | Hillsboro, OR
Pablo came to the United Stated from Puebla Mexico looking for the “American dream". He faced many barriers that prevented him from landing a good year- round job: Unable to speak English, lack of work skills, and a lack of a support network to connect him to a better job. Pablo ended up working for a cattle rancher and learned to manage livestock out on the open range. Pablo typically worked 16 hours a day without overtime at this job for over 15 years. It was a physically demanding job that required him to work long hours in all types of weather.
When Pablo came through the doors of OHDC in Hillsboro, he had been laid off due to an injury he received at work. Pablo was willing to go back to his job after he recuperated from his injuries but was told he no longer had a job and was let go. This set in a motion an unfortunate set of circumstances for Pablo and his family; his housing was tied to the ranch and when he lost his job he also lost his housing. When he came into OHDC he felt hopeless and was desperate to find a new a job. He realized that his limited English skills and narrow work history were going to hold him back.
We immediately saw the need in Pablo to find a job, so we got right to work and he became an OHDC client shortly after walking in our doors. He displayed a driven and positive attitude towards his trainings and he actively participated in our OHDC courses: Job Readiness, Rosetta Stone - ESL, Life Skills, Ethics in the Workplace, Customer Service, and Workplace Culture in the United States. All these classes helped Pablo as a person and his confidence shot up! He states “the classes I took in OHDC helped me understand more as what I need to do in order to succeed".
Pablo went to several interviews and he got denied many times due to his evolving English skills, but that never stopped him from losing hope to someday find a job. “We continued to work with him on improving his English through local ESL classes taken in tandem with the course work laid out in the Rosetta Stone software. His patience finally paid off! Today he is working full time as a truck driver in Hillsboro making $14.00 an hour.
