NFJP Success Story: Maricela

Maricela is a resilient single mother of two—one of whom has a disability—originally from the rural state of Durango, Mexico. She migrated to the United States in 1980 in search of better opportunities and has since spent over four decades working in onion, apple, and asparagus fields throughout Oregon and Washington.

Despite her unwavering dedication to her family and her work, Maricela has faced persistent challenges. As the sole provider, she struggled with seasonal employment, low wages, and unreliable transportation. For months, her car had been inoperable, and she depended on coworkers for rides just to get to work.

In May 2025, she connected with OHDC through a local outreach effort. She visited our office seeking a better path—one that could offer stability, new skills, and a brighter future for her children. Her case manager immediately saw her determination and took action, offering personalized support and a plan forward.

Through the National Farmworker Jobs Program (NFJP), Maricela was enrolled in a forklift certification course in the Tri-Cities. Initially hesitant and unsure of her ability to complete formal training, she was met with constant encouragement from her case manager. Transportation to and from class was arranged to ensure she could attend, and OHDC covered the full $150 cost of the training.

Knowing transportation was a major ongoing barrier, her case manager worked diligently behind the scenes to get her vehicle repaired. Maricela was co-enrolled under the Community Services Block Grant (CSBG) and together, NFJP and CSBG covered the full $1,200 repair cost. Her case manager also coordinated with a trusted local mechanic, ensuring the work was both safe and affordable.

With a repaired vehicle and her forklift certificate in hand, Maricela soon secured a stable job as a forklift driver at OFI (Olam of Americas) in Boardman, Oregon. Her new role offers steady hours, better pay, and—perhaps most importantly—a renewed sense of independence and confidence.

Through it all, OHDC remained by her side, advocating for her needs, removing barriers, and celebrating her achievements. This story is not only a reflection of Maricela’s strength, but also the deep impact that hands-on, compassionate support can have in transforming lives.
